Looking for a printer/scanner combination that works out of the box with Ubuntu 9.10? Look no further than HP's Deskjet F4180 All-in-One printer/scanner combination. Both scanning and printing are supported almost out of the proverbial Ubuntu 9.10 Linux box. No user interaction is required to get this printer and the scanner portion working with Ubuntu 9.10. When I plugged the printer in Ubuntu automatically added the printer driver and the scanner driver. I did a test print and it printed the Ubuntu CUPS test page just fine. I started up Xsane and Xsane found the scanner with no problem. The General Image above is the result of scanning a CD cover using Xsane and resizing it a couple of times in Gimp.

The F4180 takes a HP 21 and HP 58 ink cartridge.

I recently picked up a TP-LINK TL-WN321G USB wireless network adapter for $20. It works out of the box with Fedora 12 and Ubuntu 9.10.

Thanks Mike, this is the kind of information that makes life easier for new Linux users. I tried a no-name brand wireless adapter the other day and couldn't get it to work, so this helps me recommend one to a client.

I have two F4180s at my computer shop in Felton and they work like a charm. It should be noted, too, that the printer/scanner works out of the box not only with Ubuntu, but also with Fedora (I have one on a machine that runs Fedora 10) and OpenSUSE as well.
